Last week while I was at a networking event the age-old question popped up about how to build trust and credibility in a distrustful world?
As many of my regular marketers, copywriters, readers and Eddie Marketing Club members know, this isn’t the first time we touched base on this topic but like all things in the universe, life and business it’s always evolving.
So how do you build confidence, trust and credibility in a distrustful world?
1. Well for a start make sure your honor your word and obligations
2. If you say you’re going to do something make sure you damn well do it! Your reputation is everything.
3. Paying it forward or “giving to get” is always a good way to live and operate in today’s business world.
4. Offering a guarantee also helps reduce buyer’s remorse because the person can get their money back if they are not happy with their purchase.
In my own case since 2003 we’ve been offering a “Love Yours Sales Copy Or Your Money Back Guarantee” with every copywriting project which clients love and with my Information marketing products and marketing systems we offer a 90-day money back guarantee.
What about building trust and credibility with total strangers?
Okay I’m sure as you read this article people are buying products and services from complete strangers and businesses they’ve never heard of or bought from before.
The biggest problem with the Internet is no one knows who and what is real and who and what isn’t.
Of course building trust and confidence with new prospects is easier if they have been referred to you but what if they haven’t?
Lets strip it back to a few basic strategies and principles
In order to build relationships, trust, credibility, confidence and profitability be a strategic thinker, not an opportunist.
One strategy is to use the Visible, Credible & Profitable or VCP strategy.
Step 1 – Be visible
That’s it. Be seen. That could be at a local business networking event, tradeshow or seminar. It could mean emailing your e-newsletter subscribers and showing them tips and techniques to help make their business, finances or life better. Being visible could also mean simply picking up the phone and calling all your past customers to say Hi and touch base.
Of course then there’s presenting at business events or hosting them and adding value in you and your customers lives instead of just trying to sell them stuff.
Step 2 – Credibility
These days your credibility is under the spotlight before someone even gets to speak with you, visit your website or watch one of your videos.
With reviews, social media or reading articles just like this one, people have made their minds about you and how credible you are in a lot of cases before even talking to you.
And while credibility is about being believable, transparent and reliable it’s no wonder politicians have the lowest credibility standing in Australia.
If you want to build credibility treat customers like gold! Get clients to leave honest reviews about your services on free directory or citation sites.
The reason for that is more and more people are buying based on reviews. Of course then you would use those reviews (and testimonials) in your online and offline marketing to help build credibility as well.
Another strategy to build credibility could be to interview your industry heavyweights on certain topics of interest to your prospects and customers.
Step 3 – Profitability
Once visibility and credibility is in progress profitability will kick in to a degree over time.
Now my caveat is it does not follow in all circumstances nor does it follow in any specific time frame.
Profitability follows once you have developed enough trust and credibility with people who are interested in the skills, product or services you have to offer which are of use or of interest to those people.
However make sure you have a follow up marketing system or funnel in place to give yourself the best chance of success. The fortune is in the follow through.
Another marketing strategy I’ve been testing for a while now is the Eddie Introductory Copywriting offer.
The purpose of this is so people can get to know us, how we work and what we can do for them without them having to spend a lot of money upfront.
I used to provide free website critiques however the majority of people would just take my comments and suggestions and implement themselves but as usual fail on the execution and implementation of those suggestions.
More importantly I discovered that because people did not have to pay anything to get their free website critique they did not value it so I was attracting the wrong type of clients.
Now with my introductory copywriting offer I’m attracting more of the right type of people who understand that marketing is an investment. They’re also happy to pay a small $29 fee to cover some of the time I spend on their project and to test drive our service and many are more than one times buyers.
Thanks for reading, good luck with it and have a great day
Stay the course
